John Sowles is a Content Developer Manager at Microsoft, location in San Jose, California. He is responsible for the development and publishing of certification exams and has been instrumental in the implementation of the Anywhere Proctored exam delivery modality to the certification program to provide greater flexibility in the requirement for on-demand delivery of exams anytime, anywhere. Additionally, John created the program documents and proctor training used to train Microsoft proctors and deputy proctors around teh globe to securely deliver Microsoft exams. John currently serves as an officer on the ITCC Board of Directors as Secretary/Treasurer and has been a member of one or more ITCC task forces since 2015.
Before joining the certification team at Microsoft, John was the Exam Development and Psychometrics Manager at Ericsson, Inc., located in San Jose, California. He was responsible for the development, quality and performance of over 45 exams that made up the Ericsson Technical Certification Program (ETCP) and was instrumental in the growth of the program and the implementation of new and innovative strategies and ways of working, such as: Implementing Candidate and Proctor Agreements, Item Writer Agreements, Online Proctoring, Digital Badging, and new item types to improve exam security and integrity. While at Ericsson, John developed an internal proctor training program which was used to train Ericsson proctors globally to securely deliver Ericsson exams. He also collaborated with industry psychometric experts to analyze and publish the efficacy of certain item types on exam security, integrity and fairness.
John also had 20+ years of experience in New Product Introduction at Nortel, which involved beta testing and analysis of new software and hardware (pre-release) in live customer environments. Responsibilities included working as a liaison between customers and the internal development team to understand and correct issues found during deployment in order to improve the overall quality of the product prior to its general release.
In his personal time, John enjoys spending time outdoors hiking, zip-lining, whitewater rafting, and splitting firewood. He is also a volunteer for the Santa Clara County Sheriff Search and Rescue team, serving as the team's Medical Officer since 2016.
